A BLEND OF ACIDS IS KEY TO CONTROLLING YEAST AND MOLD GROWTH

June 13, 2022

Scientists learned many years ago that adding organic acids to feed controlled the growth of mold and yeast. Over the years, researchers have explored which acids made the biggest impact on wild yeasts and mold. The chart below summarizes the efficacy of three different acids: propionic acid, acetic acid and sorbic acid.

  • Propionic acid at 0.3% completely controlled three mold species, but at 0.5%, 60% of the wild yeast species survived.
  • Acetic acid at 0.1% controlled yeast growth and at 0.4%, controlled 4 mold species but had limited impact on three different mold species.
  • Sorbic acid at 0.1% was effective against mold and wild yeast. However, the cost of sorbic acid salts and liquid products precludes their sole use in livestock and poultry feed.

The good news? Quality Liquid Feeds has a solution that combines multiple acids to into a high-concentrated mold and yeast inhibitor. Ultra CURB®, from Kemin, combines four powerful organic acids (propionic, acetic, benzoic and sorbic) to target wild yeast growth, in addition to mold growth, to reduce total mixed ration (TMR) heating. Delivering Ultra CURB through QLF’s molasses-based liquid feed is safe, convenient and palatable.
